Tooth Extraction

Removal of a single damaged or non-restorable tooth. Shorter recovery than wisdom teeth, with the same clot protection rules.

Two weeks before

  • Stop nicotine in every form. Smoking and vaping are the single largest risk for a painful dry socket, and the suction of inhaling is part of the reason.
  • Tell the office about every medication and supplement you take, especially blood thinners, bisphosphonates, and anything for osteoporosis.
  • Ask the office whether to pause any blood-thinning medication. Do not stop one on your own.
  • Arrange your ride. If you are having sedation or general anesthesia you cannot drive yourself, and a rideshare is not sufficient.

The week before

  • Shop for soft food now. Yogurt, applesauce, smoothies eaten with a spoon, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soup cooled to lukewarm.
  • Fill your prescriptions in advance so they are waiting at home.
  • Buy extra gauze, and set aside an old pillowcase you do not mind staining.
  • Plan two to three days away from work or school for extractions, longer for jaw surgery.

The night before

  • If you are having sedation or general anesthesia, nothing to eat or drink after midnight. This includes water, gum, mints, and coffee.
  • If you are having local anesthesia only, eat a normal meal beforehand unless told otherwise.
  • Brush and floss thoroughly. A clean mouth heals better.
  • Get a full night of sleep and set two alarms.

The morning of surgery

  • Wear short sleeves or sleeves that roll above the elbow, and flat shoes.
  • Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and any oral piercings. Skip makeup and lipstick.
  • Leave valuables at home and bring your ID and insurance card.
  • Bring your driver with you. They will need to stay for the duration.

Specific to a single extraction

  • Most single extractions are done under local anesthesia, so you may be able to drive yourself. Confirm with the office.
  • Ask whether a bone graft will be placed at the same time to preserve the site for a future implant.
  • Plan one day of taking it easy rather than several.
